Crapware

Crapware is a dubious "gift" from nearly all computer manufacturers and from many hardware and software manufacturers. We use the term to describe our opinion of the value of the gift.

Your new computer may be running nearly as slow as the old one that it replaced. If that is so it is likely because it is weighed down with "Crapware" (aka: "Bloatware" or "The Value Added Software Bundle" depending on whether it is the manufacturer or the owner talking).

There is a reason that the Crap is on your computer and it has nothing to do with an altruistic manufacturer trying to provide high quality products. Crapware is installed on new computers because it provides additional income to the manufacturer. Most manufacturers spend a lot of time and effort finding out just how much crap they can install without completely alienating their customers.

Though there is truth to the saying that "one man's garbage is another man's gold", most of that confusing myriad of desktop icons and start menu items links to "stuff" that causes confusion and slows your computer while adding little if any additional functionality or value. It also compromises your privacy and security by allowing outside connections to your computer so that your computer can be "upgraded" (more "stuff" from the same folks) and used to send marketing (your private) information to companies that you have never heard of and would not want to do business with if you had.

Wall Street Blackhats: BOS believes that any software that is pre-installed on a new computer should be installed only if it will:

Viewing the "Value Added Software Bundle" with these these standards in mind and applying a little common sense lets us know that there is very little that is desirable in the "Value Added Software Bundle" and there is a good reason to avoid most of it. BOS believes that the "Value Added Software Bundle" is more closely related to the Virus, Trojan, Malware and Spyware programs being written in Eastern Europe than it is to a bundle of helpful applications that will enhance your ability to make good use of your computer.

It is ironic that we call the Bad Guys in Eastern Europe hackers while we call the hackers in corporate boardrooms software vendors and computer manufacturers.
